Why you're always tired, even after 8 hours of sleep

Most tired people are sleeping enough. In 2024, three in four American adults told the National Health Interview Survey they had felt very tired or exhausted at least some days in the past three months. One in six said most days, or every day. That is too many people for a sleep problem, and the two studies below suggest the cause is something your day drains without asking.
Sleep is not the whole story
In 2015 a team put wrist monitors on three groups of people living without electricity: the Hadza in Tanzania, the San in Namibia, the Tsimane in Bolivia. They slept between 5.7 and 7.1 hours a night, near the low end of industrial populations. They went to bed about three hours after sunset and woke before sunrise. On sleep quantity alone, they are not ahead of you.
Rest did not fix them. Moving did.
In 2008, researchers at the University of Georgia took 36 young adults who did not exercise and who reported feeling tired all the time. For six weeks, some of them pedalled an exercise bike three times a week, twenty minutes at a time, at low intensity. By their own ratings, energy rose by about a fifth and fatigue fell by about two thirds. The gentle group did better on fatigue than the group that pedalled harder, and the gains did not track fitness.
Hold this one loosely. It is one small trial with self-reported outcomes, and the wider exercise-and-fatigue literature loses much of its effect under proper placebo controls. What survives is the direction: these people had been resting, and rest had not helped.
Two kinds of attention
In 1995 the psychologist Stephen Kaplan proposed that attention comes in two kinds, and only one of them costs anything.
Directed attention is the effort of keeping your mind on something that does not hold it by itself: a spreadsheet, a queue of email, the road in traffic, the notification you decide not to open. It fatigues with use. When it is spent you get irritable, you make small mistakes, and you feel flat.
Fascination is the other kind. A fire, water moving, weather coming in, an animal at the edge of a field. These hold attention without effort, and while they hold it, the directed kind recovers. Kaplan called the gentle version of this "soft fascination", and argued that natural settings supply it in a way built environments do not.
How much of your day is the first kind
Gloria Mark has spent two decades following office workers with a stopwatch. In 2004 the average time a person stayed on one screen before switching was about two and a half minutes. By 2012 it was about 75 seconds. In her studies from 2016 to 2020 it was 47 seconds, and after an interruption, getting fully back into a task took about 25 minutes. These are measurements of switching in real offices, not of anyone's capacity, and they say nothing directly about tiredness. What they describe is a day spent almost entirely in directed attention, in small pieces, with nothing in it that refills the supply.
The day your brain was built by
For almost all of the three hundred thousand years humans have existed, a day was made of the second kind of attention: walking, watching the ground and the sky, a fire in the evening, faces known for a lifetime. Very little in that day asked anyone to hold their mind on something dull for an hour, and most of it refilled the capacity while it was being used.
Your brain still expects that day. It has been placed in one that is eight hours of the thing it cannot do for eight hours. The tiredness is the bill for a kind of attention the environment never used to charge for.
The walk that was measured
In 2008, Marc Berman, John Jonides and Stephen Kaplan gave people a backwards digit-span test, a memory task that leans hard on directed attention, then sent them on a walk of roughly fifty minutes. Half walked through an arboretum. Half walked through downtown traffic. Then the test again.
After the traffic walk, scores rose by about half a digit, roughly what taking a test twice gets you. After the arboretum, about one and a half digits. The benefit held in January, in Michigan, when the walkers reported enjoying it less. In a second experiment, looking at photographs of nature for a few minutes also improved performance on an attention task, though by less.
The protocol
Once a day, at the point where you usually go flat, walk for twenty to fifty minutes somewhere with trees or water.
- Not a run. The Georgia trial found low intensity beat moderate on fatigue.
- Not a break on your phone. A screen is directed attention in a different coat. Phone in a pocket, eyes on things that hold them by themselves.
- If you cannot get outside, the photographs helped a little, and a window with a tree in it is a photograph that moves.
Try it for a week and judge it on the afternoons.
If you are exhausted most days for months, get a blood test before you get a walking habit. Anaemia, thyroid disease and sleep apnoea produce the same symptom and none of them are fixed by an arboretum.
